How to Be a Proverbs 31 Woman

Have you ever struggled with the idea of being the perfect, Proverbs 31 woman?

In Proverbs 31:10-31, a detailed description is given about a “wife of noble character.” In these scriptures, many traits are listed that a Godly wife should possess, giving all Christian women a standard of character.

It can be easy to look at this list and feel inequivalent to the woman described in the passage of scripture, as well as a little overwhelmed by needing to live up to such a seemingly perfect person.

However, I don’t think God gave us these guidelines to make us feel bad about ourselves or discouraged. It’s quite the opposite! He gave us these guidelines to encourage us to be our best and show what our purpose as wives, mothers, sister, and friends can be in this world. And most importantly, give us a glimpse of who He can help us become!

Even if you aren’t married, all Christian women can learn something from the Proverbs 31 woman and apply her honorable traits to their lives, even in this modern day and time.

So how can you be a Proverbs 31 woman? Let’s dive in to all of the ways below!

Have Noble Character

The very first line of Proverbs 31:10-31 talks of a wife of noble character. Even if you aren’t a wife, we should all strive to have noble character as Christian women. Being honest and good is worth far more than rubies according to Scripture! (v. 10)

Be Reliable

Next, the Scripture says that a Proverbs 31 woman’s husband has full confidence in her (v.11). From this we can know she is very reliable! Act in a way that everyone has full confidence in you, and knows you will do what you say.

Work Hard

The Proverbs 31 woman is said to work with eager hands (v.13) and sets about her work vigorously (v. 17). It’s obvious that she is hard working and takes her responsibilities seriously! If you want to be like the Proverbs 31 woman, do whatever work you’ve been given with a good attitude and to the best of your abilities.

Whether it’s cleaning house and cooking for your family or behind a desk at an office, no matter what your job or responsibilities are, work hard at it!

Take Care of Your Family

The Scripture states that the wife of noble character provides food for her family and portions for her servants (v.15). That isn’t completely relatable in our modern times, but it can still be applied to your life!

If you have a husband and children, take care of them by making sure their stomachs are full and they have what they need. If you’re not married, take care of your parents, siblings, friends or anyone else that’s around you! Look out for them and care for them in the ways that they need.

Be Resourceful

A big trait of the Proverbs 31 woman is her ability to be resourceful. The story talks of how she selects a field and buys it, and from her earnings plants a vineyard (v. 16). Similarly, she’s said to use a distaff and spindle (v. 19) which she would have used to spin yarn in order to create clothing and others things for her family.

It’s obvious to see that a Godly woman is resourceful for herself and those around her, using the resources she has such as money, equipment, or materials to provide for her loved ones.

Be Financially Savvy

A Godly woman is most definitely smart with her money. Money is a blessing and a resource that God gives us and expects us to use wisely. The Proverbs 31 woman is said to have seen that her trading was profitable (v. 18), as well as made linen garments and sold them (v. 24), both of which actions would have provided extra money and resources for her family.

When we use wisely the resources, such as money, that God has given us, then we can do much more with it and be a blessing to those around us!

Be Generous

Something else we can do with our resources is be generous. The Proverbs 31 woman was said to have been generous when she was described as having open arms to the poor and extending her hands to the needy (v.20), not to mention the countless hours of sleep (v. 15) and amounts of energy she sacrificed everyday to provide for her family.

As Godly women, we should be striving to not think of just ourselves, but those around us, particularly those that have lesser.

Be Prepared

Being prepared for things to come is another great example of the responsibleness of the Proverbs 31 woman. In the Scripture, she is said to not fear the snow because her household was always dressed accordingly (v. 21). This shows her preparedness to make sure her family was ready to take on the winter months with warm clothing.

As Christian women, we should also prepare ourselves for the things that are to come. In modern times, we don’t have to worry so much about protection from the cold, but we do have many other things in life that we should be preparing for.

God wants us to be smart and ready for anything this world could throw at us and our families!

Marry a Respectable Man

In verse 23, the Proverbs 31 woman is said to have a husband who is respected in the city gates and takes his seat among the elders of the land. Not all of us are going to marry a man in office or that is respected in an authoritative sense, but all of us can marry a man of respectable character.

When seeking a mate, Christian women should always be looking for a Godly man with respectable qualities!

Be Strong

The Proverbs 31 woman is referred many times as being strong. Verse 17 says her arms are strong for her tasks, referring to strength in the physical sense, and in verse 25, it says she is clothed in strength and dignity, talking of strength in the mental/emotional sense.

As humans, we cannot always be strong on our own, but with God on our side He can help us become equipped physically and mentally for whatever task He has put before us!

Don’t Be Afraid of the Future

My favorite trait of the Proverbs 31 woman is that she can laugh at the days to come (v.25). How often do we fear the future and sit around worrying at what’s to come? At times, I could never think of laughing at the unknown. But God calls us to not be afraid.

A Godly woman should trust in the Lord to handle the future, so with her faith to carry her through, she can relax at the thought of what tomorrow might bring!

Be Wise

The Proverbs 31 woman is said to speak with wisdom and give faithful instruction (v.26). We should strive to be wise like this as well, and we can do so by reading the Word and seeking God for insight.

Fear the Lord

Last but not least, a Proverbs 31 woman is one who fears the Lord! The Scripture says a woman like this is to be praised, and fearing the Lord is much better than being charming or beautiful (v. 30).

A strong relationship with God is the foundation for becoming anything and everything that the Proverbs 31 woman is described to be. As Christian women, we can only be who God has called us to be if we have Him on our side!

Sometimes the Proverbs 31 woman may not seem reachable or even relatable to modern times. But when broken down, we can see that her qualities are timeless!

And if you ever feel like you can never be like her, remember that you weren’t meant to do it on your own! Only with God can we become the Proverbs 31 woman that He meant for us to be.
