A Prayer for Depression
In today’s world, we all face troubles, fighting numerous battles that can make the day-to-day more difficult than we would like.
Some battles are fought in the open, physically and for all to see. But other battles are more internal, sometimes never being known or acknowledged by others around us.
Mental health problems are a huge crisis today, with illnesses such as anxiety and depression debilitating countless people. Some may think that Christians wouldn’t have to deal with these battles, but it is far from the case.
The body of Christ is being hit with the same mental struggles as non-Christians and the result is saddening.
But as Christians, there must be a way to break free from the chains of mental holds such as depression. Our God promises deliverance and freedom for those who seek Him!
What if I told you that mental battles such as depression could be more than just their medical definition, and were caused by something deeper than what health professionals say?
Could depression be more of a spiritual battle, rather than a physical one? Could the armor of God and a little bit of faith be all you need to conquer the debilitating effects of depression?
As Christians, it’s probably safe to say that we all realize there is a spiritual realm. This is where God operates of course. But a lot of Christians have not come to grasp the true idea of the spiritual realm going on around us every single minute.
There is a physical world (what we live and act in everyday) and a spiritual world (made of God and his heavenly hosts such as angels, as well as Satan and his minions such as demons) coinciding, one on top of the other, at all times.
Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” This is clearly speaking of the devil and his evil spirits that operate in the spiritual realm.
The Bible informs us that Satan is the “ruler of this world” (John 12:31) and “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). He uses the spiritual realm to carry out his plans against us all, bringing as much negative outcome and separation from God’s truth as He can.
Depression is one of His many weapons.
It’s a spiritual assignment sent out to lie to us, debilitate us, seclude us, and ultimately stop us from completing the plan God has for us. The devil does not want us to grow, succeed, or know and feel the truth of God’s joy and peace.
I don’t tell anyone this to scare them, but to prep them for how to defeat the enemy’s schemes. God does not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and of sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). If we can understand, with the sound mind of God, how the enemy works, then we can cast off his wicked ways with the power our Lord has given us.
This is called spiritual warfare, and can be the key to setting your mind free from depression!
The Armor of God
So how do we fight with this spiritual warfare? It starts with putting on the full armor of God.
Ephesians 6:13-17 explains, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground… Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
In order to fight off the dark powers of the spiritual realm that we mentioned before and the depression they try to bring upon us, we must first clothe ourselves in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation and the Word of God.
We can gain these things by spending time with Jesus and renewing our minds in His Word.

Renew Your Mind
Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The first step of renewing our minds and putting on the armor of God is to know God’s truth versus Satan’s lies.
When we’re depressed, the enemy whispers all kinds of faulty things into our ears. A few things he may get us to believe are:
You’re not good enough.
No one loves you.
There’s no hope.
Plus countless others! But these are not truths that the Word of God tells us. The Lord says we are loved, filled with purpose, and can always find hope in Jesus Christ! It’s important to fill your mind with the truths of God everyday, even if you don’t believe them just yet. Eventually you will!
Next, we must strive to live righteously. We need to try and turn from sin, living according to the Bible’s ways and seeking God’s guidance in all that we do. If we aren’t living in the way of the Lord, it can give the devil a foothold (as mentioned in Ephesians 4:27) to sneak into our life, opening a door for more depression and other attacks from the enemy.
You may find that when you’re participating in worldly activities/sin or not focusing on your relationship with the Lord, your depression may increase or get worse. This is why it’s so important to guard our hearts with holiness, and choose wisely the actions we participate in.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
After righteousness, it is mentioned the gospel of peace. God promises that His peace will guard our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7). If we’re His children and seek Him, particularly in prayer, then His peace will be granted to us. This peace allows for our feet to be fitted with readiness (as mentioned above) so that we can take on whatever attacks the enemy throws at us.
We know that a lack of peace can be an effect of depression. This is no coincidence! Satan doesn’t want us to have God’s peace because he knows it’s something we can use to defeat him and his evil schemes against us.
God’s peace helps us to be content with whatever comes our way, knowing that we can handle it with the Lord by our side. Remember, He has given us not a spirit of fear, but of a sound mind.
This perfectly leads to the shield of faith! God’s peace allows us to be content with anything because we know God will help us conquer it. But how? How do we know? By faith! Having faith in the power, strength, and sovereignty of the Lord is key when it comes to defeating the enemy. We must believe God can do whatever we are asking of Him!
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Prayer for Depression
Putting on the armor of God is only one part of spiritual warfare. It’s your protection and uniform as a soldier of the Lord. However, what good is a suit of armor if you don’t use it? Prayer is your activator for the armor!
We must take all that we’ve learned about the armor of God and activate the power through prayer. If you’re struggling with depression, pray the prayer below with faith to free your mind and spirit from the oppression of the enemy. Cover yourself with this prayer every time you feel depression sneaking up on you.
If you need clarity on why I’ve written the prayer like I have, take reference from these Bible verses:
Luke 10:19- God has given us authority over Satan, and through this he cannot hurt us.
James 4:7- We can resist the devil and he must flee.
Revelations 12:11- The blood of Christ allows us to defeat the enemy.
Matthew 18:18- Whatever we bind and loose here in the physical realm will be bond and loosed in the spiritual realm.
Romans 16:20- The devil will be crushed under our feet.
I come before you in complete reverence of your glory and power. Forgive me for ever doubting your strength or putting anything else above you.
The enemy has launched an attack on my mind, sending thoughts and feelings of depression over my spirit. I know his words are not Your truth, Lord, and I choose to believe You instead. I resist his evil efforts against me.
I pray the blood of Jesus Christ over my body, my mind, and my spirit, and in Your name and authority command the devil and His adversaries to flee from me! I bind this spirit of depression, and loose your spirit of truth, love, comfort, peace, joy, power, and sound mind to replace it. In your power, I remove from Satan any authority over me, and crush him under my feet.
Thank you Jesus for your deliverance! Amen.
I hope that this prayer will be the beginning of your freedom from depression. Always remember that depression is not from God, nor is it what He wants for you. He has given you the authority to resist it and replace it with His overflowing peace, love, and joy!
You’re precious in His sight, my friend. Do not let the enemy take that truth from you!
Yours In Christ,
